EPAC 2026 – a great opportunity for patent administrators, now with CSP support

February 12, 2026

As epi members and European patent attorneys, we all know how essential well trained paralegals, formalities officers and patent administrators are to the quality and reliability of our work. With increasing procedural complexity, digitalisation and evolving legal frameworks, structured training and recognised certification have become essential across IP departments and practices.

From 2026 onwards, the European Patent Office (EPO), together with EPOrg member states, will extend the Candidate Support Programme (CSP) to candidates preparing for the European Patent Administration Certification (EPAC).
This development opens new opportunities for motivated staff members to strengthen their expertise with dedicated financial and training support.
epi members are encouraged to pass this information on to the staff members who may benefit from EPAC or CSP support. More details on EPAC, its benefits and the CSP support and timeline are below.

A modern, modular EPAC for today’s IP profession
From 2026 EPAC will be offered in a modular format, providing a flexible and accessible pathway for candidates to validate their patent administration knowledge.
The structure consists of four focused modules, each leading to an independent EPO issued diploma. Candidates may complete modules at their own pace, and once all four have been passed, they receive the full EPAC certification, officially issued by the European Patent Office.
This modular design supports career progression, accommodates work-life-balance, and reflects the evolving needs of the innovation ecosystem.

New for 2026: CSP support also available for EPAC
For the first time, candidates preparing for EPAC can benefit from the Candidate Support Programme (CSP).
Selected candidates will receive a comprehensive support package that includes:
• Structured training and tutoring
• Full coverage of exam fees and training materials
• A financial bursary during key preparation periods
• This support enables talent across participating EPOrg member states to access high quality preparation.

CSP application details
The CSP targets candidates preparing for four (recommended) or at least two EPAC 2026 modules. The programme is fully digital and open to candidates who reside in an EPOrg member state participating in the CSP.

Application period for CSP support for EPAC candidates: 30 January 2026 – 19 February 2026
Applications must be submitted to the candidate’s national patent office (NPO) and must include:
• completed online application form
• proof of permanent residency
• motivation letter
• CV
• Selection and nomination of candidates are carried out by the respective NPOs.
