EPO workshop with Business Europe and epi for a pilot system for global assignment recordals
July 27, 2026
In July 2026, the EPO held a hybrid workshop with BusinessEurope and epi, at which the EPO presented a proof-of-concept for a pilot system for global assignment recordals.
Yannick Biron and Claudia Duffy of epi outlined the full assignment procedure — a process that can be highly complex.
This pilot project is triggered by discussions at the IP5 forum where the globally five biggest IP-Offices explore possibilities to enhance the current Global Dossier system to include tools streamlining multi-jurisdictional recordals of assignments and changes to registered data of IP right owners.
Workshop participants called for a system capable of supporting multiple stages of the assignment procedure and offered valuable suggestions for making better use of data already available in existing databases, including the Global Dossier database.
A true one-stop shop for global recordals remains an aspiration for now, given the differing legal requirements across jurisdictions. Nonetheless, there is considerable scope for a well-designed system to significantly ease the burden involved, particularly for organizations managing large IP portfolios.
epi looks forward to continuing this dialogue and seeing such a system successfully realized within the next few years.
