I used to be an epi member and I would like to become an epi member again

In order to become an epi member again, you will need to be re-entered on the list of Professional Representatives before the EPO. For this purpose, you should file a request with the Legal Division of the EPO (Directorate 5.3.2.1). The applicable form (Form 52303 12.22 “Request for re-entry on the list of professional representatives before the EPO”) can be downloaded from the EPO website: https://www.epo.org/en/law-practice/options-professional-representatives. This form should be submitted via the contact form of the EPO. Further instructions can be found on the EPO website linked above.

The relevant legal provision is Rule 154(3) EPC, according to which any person entered on the list of professional representatives under Art 134(2) or (3) EPC, whose entry has been deleted shall, upon request, be re-entered on that list if the conditions for deletion no longer exist.

The Legal Division of the EPO will review whether the conditions for re-entry are fulfilled. You are asked to confirm on the form under section 1 that you are a national of an EPC Contracting State and that you have your place of business or employment in an EPC Contracting State.

Any outstanding epi annual subscription fees from the period before deletion must first be paid to epi. The bank details of epi can be found here: https://patentepi.org/en/the-institute/annual-subscription.html. Please enclose proof of payment with the request for re-entry on the list. The corresponding information can be filled out in section 4 of the form.

Your details will be included in our database once we have received the corresponding information from the Legal Division of the EPO.

I am on the list of professional representatives before the EPO. Which title may I use?

In compliance with the Recommendation of Council concerning the title (professional designation), all members of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office may use in any Contracting State the title "European Patent Attorney", "Mandataire en brevets européens", "Zugelassener Vertreter vor dem EPA" or "Zugelassene Vertreterin vor dem EPA". This recommendation also includes European titles in languages other than English, French and German.

Please find the applicable Recommendations of the epi Council on use of the professional title here.

No other persons than those entered on the list of professional representatives before the European Patent Office are allowed to use these titles.
